This is actually a goal that grew out of Calais Vermontivate play in previous years; we have created a Calais Transportation Committee out of previous (& some current!) Vermontivators. This is a long-term effort, one that will take multiple years on multiple fronts. We reaffirmed our commitment to continue working toward these important goals:
1. A GMTA bus route from Hardwick through Woodbury and East Calais into Montpelier
2. Encouraging car pooling and van pooling in all parts of town.
3. Developing a fleet of shared electric cars for those of us on the west side of town (since getting over to Route 14 to take the bus doesn't make much sense, and is sometimes really difficult due to snow, ice, and mud).
Our main goal here was to keep the transportation issue alive and energized for the long term as we focused short term energy on the food resilience and sustainability issue. I think we have succeeded in that goal. We have had great conversations about carpooling, about hybrid transportation, and most especially electric cars. And, this is a long term project. Reaching our real goals will take a lot longer than putting in a community root cellar. At the same time, the success of our Vermontivate team to actually get things done is spurring us on and exciting us to keep going.
