BREAK A LEG CHALLENGE!
FUN FACT: It takes half an ounce of gas to start the average vehicle. The fewer times you start your car, the less fuel you will use.
Step 1: For one week, Keep a log of each of trip you make in the car, writing down where you went on each leg. For example:
Drove Susie to school, went on to the drug store, came back home.
Step 2: Take a look at your log. Can you identify trips or legs that you could have eliminated by carpooling with a friend or neighbor who was going the same way? Could you have used alternative transportation for some of the legs - public transportation, bicycle, walking? Could you have combined of the trips to reduce your driving? Could you have skipped some of the trips altogether?
Step 3: Again keep a log of all of your trips in the car, including each leg of each trip, but this time, try to keep your driving to a minimum using some of the ideas you came up with in Step 2.
Step 4: Compare your week 1 log with your week 2 log, in which you tried to minimize driving. How did you do?
ALTERNATIVE: If you do not drive or do not run your own errands, keep track of the driving and errand running that is done on your behalf.
