We actually do this at least 3 times a week in our science class at ACS as part of our "Happiness Experiment".
Social Scientists have found that it takes only 21 days to rewire your brain into a more positive way of looking at life. Sadly, so many of us have fallen into negative thought habits and so our brains easily travel down those paths. We just have to create new paths for our thoughts.
I have my students record 3 things that they are thankful for almost daily and then they are to think of those three things right before they go to sleep at night. At night I often have to catch myself from making lists in my mind to thinking of those things I am thankful for...but it is worth it. I actually sleep better on those nights that I remember to do my homework!
So here is a list of some of the things I have been recording over the last several months on my gratitude page:
I am grateful/thankful for:
my son, my husband, my cat, my family, friends, the sun, water, food, trees, flowers, birds, spiders, animals of all kinds, fresh air, weather, the oceans, the beaches, rocks, books, being curious, being aware, learning, thinking, being creative, chocolate, ice cream, sushi, hugs, kisses, laughter, walking, running, playing soccer, colors, soil, traveling to new places, sitting still in one place, hearing, seeing, touching, smelling, tasting, old shoes, comfortable clothes, music, living in a beautiful and safe place, people who care about big things, the moon, the stars, our planet, the magic of life that we will never fully understand, wanting less, sleeping, teaching, children, everyday, the past...
