Workshop:  Raising Berries

April 27, 7:30, Ilsley LIbrary, Middlebury

We learned about raising blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries.  Each participant was given a strawberry plant to put into a container that we brought to the workshop.  We also planted two hanging bags of strawberries to leave at the library for their gardening program.

I have blueberry and raspberry bushes in my own garden and went to the workshop to learn more about helping them to thrive.  We learned again the importance of a soil test and to make sure the soil is on the acid side (Ph between 4.5 and 5.0) for blueberries.  I also learned about the spotted wing drosophila, the fruit fly that is attacking raspberries in Vermont.  One solution is to plant early bearing berries, which I have done with my raspberries.

It was a great chance to meet other gardeners who are excited about starting to grow berries or to continue to work with the berries they already have.
