Watchung's First Annual Earth Day Walk-Around-the-Lake!

Wednesday 4/22 6:00am to 7:00pm

Watchung Lake, Watchung, NJ

Inspired by the Earth Day Transportation Above & Beyond Challenge, I have created Watchung's First Annual Earth Day Walk-Around-the-Lake!  Knowing that not many Vermonters will be in Watchung tomorrow, I've posted my event on the Watchung Neighborhood Network Facebook group (with nearly 1000 members).   The idea is to raise awareness - people enjoying natural beauty on Earth Day are people one step closer to working to save the planet.

Here's the text of my FB post:

Come out and celebrate Earth Day tomorrow with Watchung's First Annual Earth Day Walk-Around-the-Lake!

Invite your friends, bring your family, or just enjoy a few moments of solitude. A walk around Watchung Lake is about 1 1/4 miles. Magnolias are blooming, daffodils are blooming. Are the cherry trees on the north side of the lake budding yet? What are the apple trees on the south side of the lake doing? You may spot some minnows or a frog.

Come enjoy our beautiful lake in our beautiful town on this beautiful planet!

I included a nice photo of Watchung Lake.

My FB post was garnering "Likes" within minutes, so I expect that the event will be a success!

The weather forecast called for scattered showers, but this morning is absolutely glorious!

My Earth Day walk around Watchung Lake (1 1/4 miles) was a feast for the senses.

The air was cool and clean, the sun was warm on my cheeks.

The geese were honking, the birds were chirping and cooing, the water was rushing over the spillway.

There was a smell of moist, waking-up spring-time earth.  I sniffed the blossoms; perhaps it's too early because their aromas were quite faint, except for one cherry - that was intoxicating!  (I spotted some skunk cabbage; I did not clamber through the undergrowth to break off a piece and sniff.)

Best of all were the sights: forsythia in bloom, daffodils, a purple hyacinth, one dandelion, apple and cherry trees starting to bloom, a magnolia in full blooming glory, the sun sparkling on the water, a beautiful blue sky.   It was a riot of green and blue and pink and white and yellow.

It was Heaven on Earth on Earth Day!

I wish I could share more than one photo.  I've chosen to show you the unique spillway for the dam.  After a heavy rain, there is water flowing the whole way across, and it accentuates the semicircle.
